She creates participatory objects and installations out of wood. In her sculptural and filmic work, she addresses folklore and crafts, sisterhood and queerness. In 2024 Isa Schieche received the Max Ophüls Preis - Best Short Film for “Die Räuberinnen” and the Dorothea-von-Stetten Art Prize. She was part of the program board of the Festival der Regionen, which will take place in Braunau am Inn, June 2025. Past exhibitions were: Gossip as a Lesbian Practice at Fox Vienna (2025), Dirty Care at Kunstmuseum Bonn (2024), Die Räuberinnen at Pilot Vienna (2023). Klosterkötter They say I spin, sometimes on my palms, sometimes on my toes, like an acrobat – because they can’t see. I am a mermaid or a snake and stand erect on my tail. I am a bird, an angel, and dance lightly on the hardened tips of my wings. - Claude Cahun One of the two ratchet trees is spun. A shrill creaking noise echoes through the room. In the short story collection Héroïnes (1925), Claude Cahun draws on representations of Western culture as a critical re-reading of mythical identities and stereotypical images of femininity. In the portraits of popular female key figures from the Old and New Testament, Greek mythology, central European literary history, fairy tales, and legends, the non-binary writer and artist modifies the theme of the heroine by reinterpreting well-known symbols of femininity and opening up a perspective on gender-fluid, homosexual, and bisexual identities that was scandalous at the time, thus suggesting a critical perspective for her/his political and artistic environment. The texts with titles like “Eve la trop crédule” (The overly gullible Eve), “Dalila, femme entre les femmes” (Dalila, woman among women), and “La Sadique Judith” (The sadistic Judith) allow the heroines to describe their own view of the well-known stories. Isa takes the double-headed snake, places it on the floor in front of the audience, removes one of the heads, and turns on the vibration. Original sin is a depicted in Cahun’s short story “Eve la trop crédule” as a side effect of overly convincing product marketing. Eve is drawn to a fruit that promises to impart knowledge to its consumers and emancipate them from their status as middle-class housewives (even if that would mean being guilty of hubris, since creativity was passed from God to Adam so that he could radiate his superiority to the world.) Eve and the snake find out that tasting the fruit will not harm Eve’s life as God had previously prophesied to her. His ban turns out to be absolute bigotry. After this discovery, Eve (unlike Adam and God) is willing to share with others the knowledge and understanding that was not bestowed on her from above, but that she acquired at the risk of her own life. She climbs the rope up the wall and picks an apple from the branch sticking out of the wall. With an apple in her hand, she goes to the kneeling switchblades and unfolds a head that represents the blade of the knife. Isa cuts the apple into pieces. As part of the performative installation Reverse Cowgirl: skills and tools, the artist Isa Schieche embarks on a pleasurable game between supposedly female and male movements, flirting and dance, toughness and fragility, demonstration and activation of the instruments, toys, and objects and their possible uses. In an ambivalent tension between wanting and needing, passivity and activity, power and powerlessness, the works address the difficulty of being able to move freely in spaces. As in Cahun’s Héroïnes, the question arises as to how bodies, movement, and actions take up space: what remains of them, is reported, observed, and passed on? If I vibrate with vibrations other than yours, must you conclude that my flesh is insensitive? - Claude Cahun She takes the handles of the spinning top in her hands and turns herself and the object to the music in a circle. The beat of the electronic music, produced by Antonia XM, incorporates elements such as lasso throws and horse whinnies, and approaches a syncopated climax. Elements such as a lasso, double saddle, kissing flute (a carved wooden head that is kissed in order to play it through the mouth as a flute) and knives become symbols of a self-empowering practice. The spinning top is spun by hand, originally with a whipor string. The idea of a woman in the hoop skirt, who is spun by hand or even with a whip, is difficult to reconcile with isa Schieche’s works. Her large-scale, heavy wooden object is a kind of stick figure that lends itself to spinning together thanks to the shape of its body. But the result is an interplay of spinning and being spun, and thus a shared acceleration and ecstasy. <img width="1800" height="1200" width_o="1800" height_o="1200" Just like any individual or physical object they have a three-dimensional presence and require a certain amount of surface area as well as they depend upon a form of interaction. They want to be played with – very carelessly, mostly without a clear goal. &nbsp;Of course, you can create a goal when playing with your toy, but the toy does not specify a goal itself. But what happens when we commit to or engage in playing a game (with the toy)? Games, as we know them, are a playful tool to bring together, to challenge, to occupy. They are inherently centered around the stimulation of the brain and body, the finding of strategies as well as they are about the building of community when pursued together with others. Ultimately, games can serve as models in which all participants are equal and undefined by prior characteristics or identity markers. For now, we see the game as a moment of potential, a thing we can learn from. We see toys as representatives for independent entities that need to be activated and animated. In the case of Isa Schieche’s exhibition, these assumptions just stated above start to work as a preliminary impulse facilitating further discussions around the politics of identity and encounters on equal terms. These very fundamental matters, however, approached in a very playful way, are first presented to the visitors in the form of various sculptural interventions positioned throughout the space and which are all meant for use and closer inspection. They can be touched and experienced. The four wooden objects resembling heads can even produce sounds and thus function like instruments. With this offer to experiment, to play, the artist challenges the visitors to make full use of their senses, offering a rare meeting point and unusual encounter with her sculptural works. She deconstructs an often felt hierarchy between the visitor, object, and subject in the context of a contemporary art exhibition. Besides these joyful toys, one also finds two games, again disguised as sculptures. The two – one looking like a broken wooden leg, the other like a table with a rolled out field and a golden apparatus on it – further emphasize on group dynamics, group effort, and spatial principles. They comment on theories of what it means to work together, taking into consideration aspects of hindrance as well as access. While on the table all figures belong to every player, the second game raises questions of what it means to “win” and what it takes to get there. Hinting to struggles and challenges one is facing as part of a community, they interrogate our obsession with categories such as failure and success. In a different layer to the show and yet in direct correspondence to the rest of the installation, the sculptural interventions are being framed by several drawings on the walls of the room. With motifs depicting heroic human-like jungle creatures covered in animal patterns, the artist mixes details from personal experiences and fictions with aspects evolving around the claiming of certain territories. Ultimately connecting thoughts linked to gender and its binaries, the colour pencil drawings put focus on the objectification and modification of given subjects and their bodies. Perpetuating a constant ambivalence between wanting/needing, active/passive, give/take win/lose, all works in the exhibition, in one way or another, consider the difficulties of shared spaces and From martial arts training to everyday life, we follow the protagonist's point of view and a voiceover through various landscapes and tasks. In a public toilet, above the rooftops of Vienna at sunrise, in a trailer park and in a snowy landscape, we are instructed and trained to defend ourselves against a physical attack. “Dirty Care” describes the efforts that non-normative women have to make in order not to be exposed to patriarchal violence or to be capable of standing up to it. We watch as one of Die Räuberinnen returns to her home (not even a town), where all of them will return purposefully, temporarily, to manhood. The main focus for our Räuberinnen is readying themselves for a heist, a scheme which demands them “manning up” for a crime where their manly guises will serve as foolproof cover. The film’s opening scenes follow the trio as they pass through the process of preparing their perfect crime. This transformation requires picking out suitably non-descript attire: first jeans, hoodies and button-up shirts replacing dresses and dungarees, then binders after sports bras are deemed insufficient. The dialogue runs back-and-forth between characters and options as masculine trappings are considered, attempted, discarded. Anyone who attended a drag king workshop will quickly recognise this process, but here the end is not controversial entertainment, but outright robbery. Die Räuberinnen then train each other with posture instructions, teaching each other how to stand and move. They share boxing bouts and role playing exercises, one of the trio playing the imagined victim, offering tips as they gameplan various paths their crime could take, and remarking on her preference for a captor with a gentle discernment. It’s the task of this little text to spell out for you reading this double-sided page what the movie mostly only teases at, and heavily&nbsp; implies: this drag act is no ordinary metamorphosis, but one of reversal. The film’s conceit is masculinity returning as a layering across a trans-female surface.&nbsp; These ladies are doubling back on themselves, or perhaps flipping their transitions. But while that much is clear, many questions remain: does this scheme cover over on the exotic and everyday womanhood these characters adopted, or double down on their skills at calculated stylisation? What makes such an unlikely masc patina seem worth adopting? What does it really mean to make a disguise belong to you? What’s left unclear is how much of a “return” their drag-heist truly is: are we watching an act of them remembering and temporarily reviving bygone personae, or are these techniques of manhood new attire that they’re mastering now for the first time? Die Räuberinnen remains too mysterious for us to really judge: we only receive snatches of their histories (as two reminisce together). For the most part we only see them plotting, at play, and (finally) at work. As they relax together, the film also demonstrates the on-going continuity of their everyday lives in motion, estrogel smeared across their skin as they dance together, and finally entwine. This display of sapphic intimacy is clipped short by gunshots, as a row between two of Die Räuberinnen breaks out over target practice (echoing around the sleepy region). Following this dispute, we see the film’s only scene featuring on screen outsiders confronting the gang. An armed local, Sepp, encounters Die Räuberinnen, warning them against the poacher (in reality their training gunshots). This brief scene is a loaded one. On the one hand the extent of surveillance those in rural areas apply to each other is made clear: the ferocious gossip that exists simply for lack of much else to do besides it. Out here in “the middle of nowhere”, no false move will not be noticed, and spread quickly. This pervasive observation stands clearly in opposition to any hopes of Die Räuberinnen’s plot succeeding. Yet the extent of our outsider’s obliviousness, which passes over more smoothly than our conspirators can easily believe, is surely immediately recognisable not only to many trans viewers but all those who attempt to live their lives openly as lesbians…Only to find their passion illegible to so many encountering it. Quite different from outrage or horror, this refusal to see provides scope for hiding, at the cost of denial.Far from suspecting the gang, Sepp refers to Die Räuberinnen as “Young girls”. This diminutive hints not only at the unreconstructed sexism that can still survive unchallenged in their surroundings, but also his obliviousness to the technology of transition (in either direction!) that he has stumbled upon. Hinting at the success of their venture, Sepp sees the conspirators as innocents, sharing his simplicity, and requiring his protection. On another level his identification of our robbers as young girls references communist collective Tiqqun’s most notorious text, Théorie de la jeune fille, which dives into the feminising (and effeminating) constitution of the contemporary capitalist slut-subject. This is assuredly an unwitting namedrop by the simple rural gent, further underscoring the contrast with one of Die Räuberinnen, who his appearance interrupts from idly perusing Philosophy For Spiders (McKenzie Wark’s exploration of her late friend Kathy Acker’s “low theory”). The extent to which female mischief is underestimated by this investigation lends an air of dry comedy. If it’s the task of men to behold and of women to be seen, we see here a reversal through theoretical reference itself: it seems that witnessing womanhood can also strike male on-lookers blind. Delightfully, we receive no explicit answer as to the motivation of the crime. This question in one scene sits suspended, one robber-girl asking another why in a moment of doubt, receiving no reply. Speculations are simple enough: surgeries, debts accumulated through any number of transition costs, perhaps revenge for whatever reason a trio of transsexuals might have been wronged. The ambivalence sets up a kind of mystique, but also requires we extend some trust to the characters: a hostile viewer could easily read into this silence a mindless criminality, yet the softness and uncertainty of Die Räuberinnen as they ready themselves for the heist strongly implies their scheme is a one-off, rather than a regular jape. But who could easily resist a sequel, then another “one last job”? There’s a word which I’ve been avoiding using so far through fear it would shape reception of this short film in some predictable ways. It’s a funny quandary that writers find ourselves in pretty often: the concepts we’re toying around with are always “played out” (hackneyed, cliché, or just tired) among certain audiences, while others picking up our texts will find themselves introduced to these ideas, these terms of art (for the first time). It’s impossible to twist an idea, to “subvert” it, without also breathing new life into it, and carrying it on to new audiences. Our attempts to wriggle free of the standard form, or make light of disciplinary norms, actually expose them to people who don’t have these reference points rattling around in their head (yet!) Anyway, to spit it out: I’ve been trying to avoid saying our robber-girls are locked into a performance. Performing is a funny thing, much like writing prone to referencing other shows, other acts, the audience may only know through this gesture. This can lend itself to elaborate back-and-forths which are well established in theatrical performance: Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream (written between 1595-1596) toyed with having its all-male actors flip between man and womanhood with a comedic flourish. Yet this history of playful fluidity exists uneasily with lives that may be dramatic, but extend well beyond the stage. We see this ambivalence surface earlier as one of Die Räuberinnen calls another “natural” at the task of manning-up, with an offended response seeing her quickly double back with: “baby…I didn’t mean it like that”. Here we see the predicament of the robber-girl’s mission: to adopt the guises they’ve chosen so seamlessly that they might return to their everyday reality as women unmarked. Their survival demands a dissonant cultivation of skills they’d previously pointedly refused. But can success in these terms be so easily walked away from? This layering is added to once more by one of Die Räuberinnen recounting to her peers an act of hers (form unspecified) leaving an impression on a friend, who confided that she also used estrogel to manage her endometriosis (uterine tissue forming beyond the uterus, usually causing scarring and inflammation across the pelvis). It doesn’t seem like a simple coincidence that this tale of a performance’s aftermath is accompanies a moment of solidarity between women recounted in the conversation between friends, with a second (on camera) between Die Räuberinnen, at the same moment the word “transgender” is used explicitly for the first and only time. Two pairs of women recount their shared experiences, one on screen and one spoken of, one pair sharing their commonality, and the second doing just the same. While many ambiguities are sustained, what the film leaves unmistakably clear is that Die Räuberinnen are a trio of women passing for men (if perhaps not for the first time). What we witness is not the free play of fluid forms, but what had been fixed becoming refixed. It’s perhaps fitting that the film’s finale delivers us only a glimpse as two of our robber-girls carry out the heist. The credits (and a decidedly urban techno soundtrack) cut across the robbery itself, leaving the outcome as unclear, yet easily guessed as the crime’s motive. Don’t flinch from cheering them on. The starting point for their performance are elements from traditional Austrian dance, particularly the skill and courting dances that were both almost exclusively reserved for men. In the context of traditional dances, roles and movement patterns are assigned in a heavily binary manner, and also charged with sexism. Skills &amp; Tools: A Guidebook picks up on these handed down dance elements and re-interprets them within a feminist and queer performance. The sound artist Oskar Mayböck accompanies the piece in which the audience members are also directly included.
